PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Crews are working on finishing up renovations at the LMCU Ballpark as the West Michigan Whitecaps get ready for opening day.

The project includes a brand-new home clubhouse, with new locker rooms, a large weight room and batting tunnels. Crews are also redoing the former home clubhouse, which will now offer facilities for visiting teams.

“This has been a big project that that we started on almost two years ago,” West Michigan Whitecaps President Steve McCarthy told News 8. “It’s aimed at improving the player facilities initially, and then it expands into more fan-facing amenities and really just changing the entire fan experience out here for years to come.”

The clubhouses will offer updated amenities, like USB plugs in the lockers and a dedicated space for coaching staff and umpires who are women.

“There are far more female coaches on staffs now and as well as the umpires,” McCarthy explained. “So it was part of Major League Baseball’s push to make sure that our facilities were accommodating to that as well. We had other ways that we could we could find spaces, but now we have dedicated spots for them.”

Many of the player-facing improvements are driven by Major League Baseball facility standard requirements.

Crews are also adding a new suite-level club space built above the clubhouse that will fit up to 200 fans, with a new view of the field and a nearby kitchen. Below the home clubhouse will be new storage space.

While there were some early-on complications related to tying the project to the existing building, Erhardt Construction Senior Vice President Ryan Formsma said construction is going well. Crews on Tuesday were working on the structure’s walls, roofs and metal stud framing.

“It’s exciting to start to see it all come together and to take shape,” he said, adding that he’s heard a lot of excitement from people who have seen the project from the freeway.

Next fall, crews will begin work on other aspects of the renovation project, including adding fan-facing amenities like new terraces. The field will also be replaced.

Opening day is just over a month away, as the Whitecaps are set to take on the Quad Cities River Bandits on April 9. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Whitecaps scarf.

Other promotions and theme days this season include a Bluey and Bingo meet-and-greet on May 31, a princess and pirate night on June 14 and a Whitecaps family showdown night on June 21.
