CHILDREN’S HEALING CENTER HEADQUARTERS
The Children’s Healing Center (CHC) is an oasis for families with immunocompromised children to step away from the stress of a complex medical diagnosis and experience the healing power of “Good. Clean. Fun.” Focusing on socialization, play therapy, recreation, and education, the Children’s Healing Center quickly outgrew its space on Fulton Street in Grand Rapids. After completing small build-out projects for the organization at their former location, Erhardt Construction was awarded CHC’s new headquarters project.
The project involved renovating a former college administration building into the new headquarters space. The scope of work included extensive remodels to three of the building’s four wings. The fourth wing was demolished and replaced with a half-gymnasium and entry addition. The remaining three wings were renovated to include exploratory art and playrooms, multipurpose rooms, a café, a teen hangout space, a parent relaxation/counseling area, and CHC’s headquarters offices.
Additionally, a large hospital grade HVAC system was installed to provide the entire building with consistently clean air. The building was renovated with bright, fun colors and handwashing stations throughout, both of which are essential to CHC’s mission.
Erhardt was brought in early to collaborate with the selected architect throughout the design-build process. This ensured that the team could confirm the constructability of the project within the expected timeline. The project took 12 months to complete, beginning in late August 2023 and finishing construction in early September 2024.
