Erhardt Construction partnered with the Muskegon Museum of Art, Annum Architects, and Mathison | Mathison Architects to complete a 26,000-square-foot expansion—nearly doubling the museum’s size and reinforcing its role as a cultural anchor in West Michigan. The project took 21 months to complete.
The Muskegon museum expansion blends historic charm with modern design to support rotating exhibitions, community programming, and long-term art preservation. The exterior features anodized bronze aluminum siding—custom-fabricated and donated by a local Muskegon company. Inside, the main level includes a grand foyer, a 5,000 SF convertible gallery, flexible classroom studios, and a new gift shop.
A split staircase highlights a suspended glass mobile by Beth Lipman, leading to a connecting gallery filled with natural light from full-height curtain wall glazing and two upper-level galleries. The basement includes climate-controlled art preservation infrastructure, with storage space and a print gallery offering visitors a view into conservation efforts.
This cultural facility construction project enables the museum to display 275 additional pieces of work, expanding access to the arts in West Michigan.
